ISL:
NorthEast United FC get past Kerala Blasters FC 1-0 in an evenly fought match
Kerala dominated possession in the first half:-
It is fair to say that Kerala Blasters dominated the ball which is reflected in their 57% ball possession. The Blasters’ captain, Nigerian Penn Orji started the proceedings in a great manner as he controlled the game from the midfield. They played smooth passing football, keeping the ball.
Ricki Herbert’s side mostly depended upon speedy counter attacks. In the 32nd minute, local boy Durga Boro took a blinder of a shot from 30 yards which was saved by Kerala’s marquee player David James. In the 45th minute, NorthEast got a throw in, which was unconvincingly cleared by Blasters defender Gurwinder Singh. Koke received the ball with ease and blasted the ball on the half-volley into the net. Except for the soft clearance, Gurwinder was exceptional, clearing every ball which came his way.
NorthEast resisted strongly in the second half:-
In the second half, Blasters started dominating yet again but their attacks were not fruitful as midfielder Penn Orji became ineffective. The pace of the match also decreased as both the team slowed down their proceedings.
In search of an equalising goal, assistant coach, Trevor Morgan made two changes in the 65th minute . The ineffective CS Sabeeth was replaced by Saumik Dey and midfieldier Stephen Pearson replaced by the experienced Michael Chopra.
The changes almost worked, as Hume saw his lob cleared off the line, while Chopra saw his rebound blocked on the line.
Later he added an extra striker to the attack force, bringing in Australian Andrew Barisic. Kerala got a few half chances which were missed by Michael Chopra. Iain Hume got probably the best opportunity in the dying stages of the game from a swifty taken Andrew Barisic throw but failed to finish from an acute angle in a one on one situation with Tzorvas. NorthEast, on the other hand, got an opportunity to seal the match in the dying stages as South Korean Dong blazed into the Kerala Blazers penalty box, forcing David James to come out and clear the ball. Milan Singh got the ball in the middle of the field and attempted a shot into the empty net. Unfortunately, the ball hit the crossbar and the rebound was blazed over.
Overall both the teams played impressive football and it was an entertaining game to watch. In the next games, North East United host Atletico de Kolkata while Kerala Blasters visit Chennai to take on Chennaiyin FC in the South India’s derby game.
After a cracking first game of the Indian Super League the tournament moved onto the second fixture where the North East United hosted the Kerala Blasters in the Indra Gandhi Stadium in Guwahati.

Details
This match was seen as a fight between the young brigades of the north east fighting out against the experienced Kerala team. The North Eastern Team is full of young talent from India and is a promising side to look forward in the tournament on the other hand the Kerela Team has seen it all in the Indian football and knew every part of the game well.
The match started off in a tight manner with no team letting it out that easily. The teams were looking to keep possession in the start and Kerala mastered the art of it as they enjoyed most of the possession in the first half of the game. The first moments were calm and unlike the 1st match both team looked pretty much composed and well prepared on the field. The passing among the Kerala was superb as they kept on rolling the ball and kept possession easily. The moment came up in the 16th minute when Iain Hume netted the ball from a cross for the Kerela Blasters but it was disallowed as he was called offside. The next few moments were deadly as the Kerala was on the top but the North East team kept a good solid defence. Slowly the game started to gain pace but the North Eastern United FC goalkeeper stood rock solid. In the stoppage time of the first half the moment came when the match saw the first goal. The goal was scored by Koke the North Eastern Striker which made the packed house of India Gandhi Stadium erupt. The Spaniard scored the goal for the team just before the end of half.
The second half of the game was much more about desperation from the visitors as they looked to score goal in order to find the equaliser. The defence was strong from the home side and the real hero of the moment was Alexandros Tzorvas. The Goal keeper never allowed the ball to go past him. The second half also saw the conditions playing its part in the game as players were found limping with cramps. At the end of the 90 minutes the home side was able to keep the score line intact and thus winning the game pretty comfortably. With this win the team earned 3 points from the match while the visitors found it tough.

Today Match:-
How the match go today?
Full-Time: Mumbai City FC 0-2 NorthEast United FC (Kondwani Mtonga, Felipe de Castro) The referee blows for full-time as the home side have been handed their second defeat of ISL 2014 and their first at the DY Patil Stadium. NEUFC played well while lady luck was not supporting MCFC with Ljungberg’s fitness and Cmovs’ clumsiness. NEUFC climb to second in the league table with seven points from four matches. It’s goodbye from us, see you tomorrow for the match between Delhi Dynamos FC and Chennaiyin FC.
90+2′: GOAL – NorthEast United FC: It’s game over for the hosts as Felipe de Castro doubles NEUFC’s lead. Kenee beats Mondal on the right with absolute ease and sets up Felipe, who slams his left footed shot straight into the top corner; beyond Subrata Paul’s reach.
90′: We are nearing the final whistle with just five minutes of injury time added on. NEUFC have the ball where they want in Mumbai’s half. And being down to nine-men is certainly not helping the hosts.
86′: Mumbai City FC have a free-kick just 25 yards away as Keene hauls down Ralte with a boot to his face. Rehenesh sets up his wall as Nadaya stands over the set-piece and the Argentinian shoots straight into the wall.
81′: Attempt – Off-target – Mumbai City FC: Lalrindika Ralte tries to create something on his own from the left as he cuts Khongjee and tries to curl a shot over; the ball is flying high anyway but a slight deflection gifts the hosts a corner off it; which is cleared well and on the other end MCFC win a freekick as Stohanzl is elbowed by Keene.
78′: NEUFC have an opportunity to kill the game off with a second goal as Dong-Hyun finds himself with too much space on the left. The South Korean unselfishly tries to set up Keene in far post but over-hits his pass.
75′: RED CARD – MUMBAI CITY FC: It’s going from bad to worse for the hosts as Pavel Cmovs is given his marching orders for a second yellow card. He was already booked earlier and hauls down Keene with an absolutely needless tackle. MCFC had a mountain to climb with 10-men now they have to do the same with nine.
73′: Massive blow for Mumbai City FC as they are down to 10 men. Freddie Ljungberg, who came in the second-half as a substitute has hit the deck clutching his hamstring and Peter Reid has also used all his substitutions.
71′: Substitution – Mumbai City FC: The home team in search of an equaliser have sent on Diego Nadaya in place of Nadong Bhutia.
69′: Substitution – NorthEast United FC: Koke has done well but failed to get his name on the scoresheet. The Spaniard is replaced by former Portsmouth starlet James Keene.
67′: NEUFC have had most of the possession in the second half. Didika shows a glimpse of his talents as he leaves Doungel flat footed and feeds the ball to Bhutia on the right. But his attempt to win a corner is futile as the ball hits him and goes behind for a goal-kick.
64′: Substitution – Mumbai City FC: The crowd are cheering for the home team to come back into the game as Tiago is replaced by Deepak Mondal; a like-for-like substitution. Just seconds ago Lalrindika Ralte was down on the pitch with a cramp but looks okay to proceed.
61′: Substitution - NorthEast Unted FC: Seminlen Doungel replaces a tired Adinga who has been quite a threat for the hosts on the left wing.
58′: GOAL – NorthEast United FC: The deadlock is broken just before the hour mark and the away team have taken the lead through Kondwani Mtonga. The Zambian midfielder picks up Koke’s perfectly weighed chip behind MCFC defence, hold s of Tiago and beats the onrushing Subrata Paul with a neat lob. Mumbai City FC 0-1 NorthEast United FC
51′: Yellow Card – Mumbai City FC: Pavel Cmovs shows his physical prowess once again and makes a powerful tackle, this time on Mtonga. The referee is not happy and books the Czech Republican defender having already warned him in the first-half.
48′: Attempt – Off-target – NorthEast United FC: Tiago’s attempted pass is intercepted by Mtonga and Durga Boro picks up the spoils. He beats Ljungberg and sends a rocket of a shot from 30-yards out; Subrata dives full stretch but thankfully the ball is over the crossbar and flies away for a goal-kick.
46′: NEUFC will get us underway and Mumbai City FC are bringing on Friedrich Ljungberg to spur the home support on; he replaces Andre Moritz. Mumbai City FC have just 10 men on the field and the fourth official is missing and hasn’t allowed the marquee player to come on. Finally the Arsenal legend comes on as the ball goes out of play and the home side have 11 men on the field.
Half-Time: It is likely that Freddie Ljungberg will be brought on sometime in the second-half. MCFC have been strong in all departments but neither team have managed to score a goal. Peter Reid will be hoping to see his players break the deadlock, no matter who it comes from. NEUFC too have shown some brilliance since Felipe de Castro has come on. Can Koke inspire the visitors and score his third goal to become the joint top scorer? The second-half just minutes away!
45′: Yellow Card – Mumbai City FC: Just one minute of added time at the end of 45 and the half ends with Letzelter picking up a booking. Not the first time that the Frenchman has lunged for the ball and floored an opponent. The referee is not keeping the card in his pockets anymore and books the number two.
44′: Attempt – Off-target – Mumbai City FC: Letzelter finds Nadong Bhutia free in the middle of NEUFC half but the 20-year-old’s effort is wide off the mark.
38′: Stohanzl does well to hold off the challenge from Mtonga and crosses the ball in hope that some blue player will be on the end of it but it is cleared away by Garcia. NEUFC break on the other end as Letzelter brings down Robin Gurung but the referee allows play to continue; playing advantage for the visitors. Tiago saves the day as he pulls off a clear tackle to prevent Do Dong-Hyun from creating an opportunity for Koke or Boro.
31′: Tiago clumsily gives the ball away allowing Boro to try and create something for NEUFC but the Switzerland player comes back to wrest the ball back for his team.
26′: The hosts are trying to create something but NEUFC defence have been stubborn. Mtonga has been marking Moritz very closely preventing him from creating or taking a lot of attempts on goal.
21′: Attempt – Off-target – NorthEast United FC: Zodingliana Ralte (Adinga) is giving Peter Costa numerous problems down the left and the former hauls down the NEUFC player after he megs him. Koke delivers the free-kick but Castro’s header is over the crossbar.
18′: Attempt – Off-target – NorthEast United FC: Castro looks to make a quick impact on the game after coming on as a substitute. The Brazilian is sent down the right by Koke; he cuts back to beat Cmovs and curls a shot towards far post but it doesn’t fly inside the frame and Peter Reid can heave a sigh of relief.
13′: Nadong Bhutia races through on goal from the right and tries to set up a teammate but the ball is cleared away by NEUFC, who launch a counter attack but the ball is too fast for Boro and Subrata Paul is able to gather it inside the box. Moritz looks lively despite having a wound on his head (which is bandaged ofcourse) and is spraying long-balls to either wing.
11′: Substitution – NorthEast United FC: Chansa, who took a crunching tackle from Cmovs early in the game is replaced by Felipe de Castro. The problem is unclear. The visitors also have a slight tension as Koke was down injured for a brief period after collision with Friedrich. But the Spaniard gets up holding his neck and is fit to continue.
7′: Attempt – Off-target – Mumbai City FC – Andre Moritz, who had scored a hat-trick in the previous game here tries to score from 25-yards out. The Brazilian is given way too much space but his shot doesn’t have enough power and rolls wide off Rehenesh’s goal.
3′: Heavy tackle there from Cmovs on Chansa near the half-way line; the Czech Republican defender takes the ball but floors the Zambian. The refre warns the MCFC player to play it calm. Peter Reid’s side have maintained most of the possession as neither side have managed to create any clear-cut chance!
1′: Mumbai City FC, wearing their blue colour, kick-off the match this evening.
We are less than three minutes away from kick-off. Both coaches have stuck with the same lineup as the previous game. Peter Reid keeps Freddie Ljungberg on the bench while the visitors have Rehenesh TP on goal. Syed Nabi continues to be on the treatment table with injury so Manuel Friedrich will continue to don the armband. Nadong Bhutia has been quite the live wire alongside Lalrindika Ralte on either wings with Andre Moritz bolstering the attack from the centre. NEUFC have Durga Boro leading the attack, who is yet to score a goal but the real goal threat is playing behind him and goes by the name of Koke.

Hello, welcome and wishing everyone a very Happy Diwali as we at India.com are building up towards the live coverage of the 11th Indian Super League (ISL) 2014 match between Mumbai City FC and NorthEast United FC at the DY Patil Stadium. The hosts lost their opening game to Atletico de Kolkata but showed considerable bite against FC Pune City FC, trumping their fellow state rivals by five goals to nil.
Andre Mortiz is the man to watch out for from Peter Reid’s side with the Brazilian midfielder showing his attacking prowess by netting a hat-trick last Saturday. The visitors however can’t be underestimated as Ricki Herbert’s young side have managed four points from three matches, losing only to league leaders Atletico de Kolkata. Though lacking the goal-scoring swagger Koke has been the star man for NEUFC having struck two goals so far.
Will there be an upset in store for the home side…I don’t think so; as the team co-owned by Ranbir Kapoor has marquee player Freddie Ljungberg 100% fit to feature while French striker Nicolas Anelka completes his three-match ban and will feature in the next match. I would back Mumbai City FC to win this one and my prediction is a 3-0 victory for them. Do leave your thoughts and predictions in the comments section below.
